Normal Pregnancy: A Clinical Review | Juniper Publishers


Abstract: First and foremost, pregnancy is not a disease; it is a “state of being”. All mammals, humans included, are on this planet for one purpose and one purpose only, to procreate for the purpose of the continuance of the species. No religious arguments will be discussed in this paper as they are all irrelevant to the process of a normal human pregnancy. This paper is being written so it can be used as a quick review for physicians that may not do Obstetrics as their primary speciality. Many countries allow General Practitioners and Family Practitioners to manage pregnancies and deliver babies, as long as they have privileges to do this in the hospital. Usually however, non OB/GYN’s will not be allowed to be the primary surgeon on a Caesarean Section due to lack of practice and hospital rules, but they will be allowed to be First Assistant.

Extrapyramidal Side Effects of Metoclopramide in a Child-A Case Report-Juniper Publishers

Juniper Publishers - Journal of Pediatrics Abstract Metoclopramide is antiemetic, antinauseant and gastric prokynetic. European medicines agency (EMA) in July 2013 has officially recommended a very restricted use of metoclopramide in children, because of serious and common neurological side effects. A 3 years old boy was admitted to our pediatric department due to altered consciousness, nausea, vomiting and dehydration. Day before he recived a one oral and one intravenous dose of Reglan (metoclopramide). Immidiately after admission he developed dramatic neurological symtoms with face and extremity muscles spasms, trismus, ophistotonus and extreme agitation. Neurological symptoms were present for about 3 hours, with periodically withdrawal and worsening. He received only symptomatic therapy and after 6 hours child was fully recovered and without complaints. Juniper Publishers - Journal of Pediatrics Abstract Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in the very low birth weight premature newborn (VLBWPN) is currently treated with medical therapy or by surgical ligation. The objective of this mini-review and brief case report is to highlight the potential side effects of medical therapy (indomethacin or ibuprofen) including bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), bowel perforation, pulmonary edema and bleeding, retinopathy, thrombocytopenia, and decrease in renal function and present an example of a patient frequently encountered in the neonatal intensive care unit that dramatically improved with prompt surgical intervention.
